Heat Pumps in Mallorca

The words cover two different purchases. A reversible split system on a wall is a heat pump, and so is the larger machine standing outside a plant room warming water for a floor, for radiators and often for the taps as well. Which of the two a property wants decides the size of the job, the trade that does it and the shape of every quote that follows. Describe the property and we pass the request to air conditioning and heat pump companies that fit both kinds.

One name, two different purchases

If the air conditioning in the house heats as well as cools, the property already has heat pumps on its walls. That is all reversible means: the machine moves heat in whichever direction is wanted, and through a mild winter it does that cheaply. Nobody calls it a heat pump because it arrived under another name.

The other purchase is the larger machine that warms water instead of air. It reaches much further into the building than a wall unit does, it brings a cylinder, pipework and controls with it, and it takes over from whatever is heating the property now. What that work involves belongs on the installation page; what matters here is that the two are different jobs and are quoted as such.

So the first thing to settle is which of the two is being asked for. It decides what has to be opened, where the plant stands, how long the work takes and who you should be talking to, and it is why two prices for the same property can look nothing like each other. It is worth settling in the first conversation rather than in the third.

Where a heat pump question goes from here

Heat pump installation

The job itself: how a company surveys the building, arrives at a size and commissions the result.

Underfloor heating

The emitter a water system suits best, and usually decided in the same conversation.

Maintenance

Servicing, which a machine that runs all winter needs as much as one that runs all summer.

Villas

Where the winter question usually decides the whole specification.

Air conditioning

If what the property really wants is cooling, with some warmth in February.

Smart climate control

A system that holds a steady temperature is run by its schedule rather than by a switch.

What to ask a heat pump company

These are the questions that make two quotes comparable, and the answers say as much about the company as about the machine.

  • Whether the quote is for reversible air conditioning or for a water system
  • How the size was arrived at, and what about this building it rests on
  • What the system is expected to feed, and at what water temperature
  • Whether the hot water comes from it, or stays with whatever makes it now
  • Where the outdoor unit stands, and where the cylinder and the buffer go
  • Whether existing radiators or floors are being reused, and how they behave
  • Who does the plumbing side of it, and whether that sits in this price
  • What commissioning covers, and who sets the curves once it is running
  • Who comes back to service it, and how often that is expected

Replacing what heats the property now

The starting point is what the heating is at the moment: electric panels that were cheap to fit and are expensive to run, bottled gas, an oil boiler in an outbuilding, or nothing beyond a reversible unit taking the edge off a cold evening. Saying which of those is being replaced is the most useful sentence a request can contain, because it decides what the new system has to do and how much of the house it touches.

Replacing a heat pump that is already there is a shorter conversation. The pipework and the emitters exist, the machine has stopped keeping up or the repairs have stopped being worth it, and the real question is whether the original design deserves repeating. Often it does not, because the water temperature and the controls are where the old system was losing money rather than the box outside.

A renovation changes the timing rather than the work. The floor build-up, where the plant will stand and what the electrical supply has to carry are all settled early, and all three come out differently if a water system is coming. Deciding late seldom changes the machine; it changes how much finished work has to be undone to fit it.

Reading two heat pump quotes side by side

Price is the last thing to compare, because two quotes for the same property are often not for the same system at all.

  1. 01

Check what each one is actually for

One may be reversible units on the walls and the other a machine feeding water to a floor. Both are heat pumps and neither is wrong, but they answer different questions, and the gap between the two prices is telling you nothing useful about either.

  2. 02

Ask what the sizing rests on

A capacity is an argument about the building on a cold night, taken room by room. A company that has done that arithmetic will show it without being pressed, and one that has not will want to talk about the machine instead.

  3. 03

    Find the water temperature

It is the number that decides what the system costs to run, and it comes from what the machine feeds rather than from the machine itself. Two quotes written at different flow temperatures are two different systems, whatever the unit standing outside is called.

  4. 04

Settle the hot water before comparing

A water system can make the hot water as well, and whether it does changes the cylinder, the space that cylinder needs and the price. Two quotes that disagree about this are not quoting the same house.

How your request reaches a company

Mallorca Climate Control is a comparison service. A request for a heat pump goes to the air conditioning and heat pump companies on our list; they quote the work and carry it out, and any agreement is between you and the company you pick.

  1. 01

    Describe the job

Tell us the property, roughly what you want and where it is. Photographs and a rough plan help, though neither is required.

  2. 02

    We match it

The request goes to companies that work in your area and take on this kind of job at this size.

  3. 03

    They quote you

Each company contacts you directly with its own price, timing and approach. We do not set any of it.

  4. 04

    You compare and choose

Put the quotes side by side and take the one you want, or none of them. Using the site costs you nothing.

Is the air conditioning I already have a heat pump?

If it heats as well as cools, yes. A reversible split system moves heat in both directions, which is the whole of the definition, and in this climate it does the winter job for a good part of the year. When people talk about installing a heat pump they usually mean the other machine, the one that warms water instead of air, and that is a larger job with a different kind of quote behind it.

Do I need a heat pump company or an air conditioning company?

For reversible units it is the same trade. A water system reaches further into the building, because it brings a cylinder, pipework, controls and whatever is being heated with it, so the useful question is who takes that side of the work and whether it sits in this price or with somebody else. A plain answer tells you how the job will actually run.

When is replacing an existing heat pump the right call?

The usual triggers are a machine that no longer keeps up, a refrigerant that has become hard to get hold of, and a repair that costs a serious fraction of a replacement. What makes the replacement quotes comparable is saying what is there now: the machine, what it feeds, and whether the pipework and the emitters are staying. A company that intends to reuse them and one that does not are answering different questions.

Is a renovation the moment to do it?

It is the cheapest moment, and the one with a deadline attached. The practical part is timing the conversation rather than the work: a company can only price it properly against the programme, so what is worth sending with the request is which stage the building work has reached and which of the floors, the plant space and the electrical supply are still open.
