Heat Pump Servicing in Mallorca

A heat pump that has never been serviced does not suddenly fail. It quietly becomes more expensive, running longer to reach temperature, losing pressure slowly, and watching its efficiency drop year on year. Describe the system and how long it has been running, and we pass the request to air conditioning and heat pump companies that service them.

What degrades on a heat pump

The outdoor coil on a heat pump does the job that an air conditioner’s coil does, and then does the opposite in winter. That switch demands a defrost cycle, and the defrost cycle is where water condenses and then refreezes. In a salty climate that condensation attacks the metal, and the defrost process tears ice away from the fins, leaving microscopic damage. A coil that is cleaned regularly lasts longer and works better; one that is never touched becomes a problem in five or six years.

The refrigerant charge is the second thing that degrades. A sealed system should hold its gas forever, but a microscopic leak that lets one gram out per year does not announce itself as a puddle. After three years that system is down five per cent, and that five per cent means it works harder for no more cooling or heating. After six years it is obvious. The charge is the first thing a service visit should check.

Flow and return temperatures are the third. A heat pump that was commissioned with a water temperature curve loses that efficiency if the control system drifts. A system left running flat out because the curves were never programmed correctly is less obvious but more expensive. That is not a failure; it is a control problem that a service visit finds.

What a proper service visit covers

This is worth comparing quotes against. A cheap visit is usually a short one.

  • Refrigerant pressures measured and compared against what they should be
  • The outdoor coil washed and any corrosion addressed
  • The indoor coil checked for blockage and cleaned if needed
  • The expansion valve or capillary and the drying cartridge inspected
  • Filters on the water loop checked or replaced
  • The cylinder thermostat and immersion heater tested
  • Flow and return temperatures measured under load
  • The heating curves on the control system reviewed and adjusted if needed
  • The defrost cycle checked and the sensor cleaned
  • Electrical connections and contactors inspected, since vibration loosens them

When servicing is worth doing

The timing matters as much as the frequency.

  1. 01

Before winter, on a system that heats

If the machine is being relied on for heat, a service before winter is the right timing. A fault found then is one found while the system can still be repaired calmly, before January.

  2. 02

After the summer, on a system that cools

A machine that has been running hard all season is the one most likely to show a drift in pressure or a failing compressor. A service after cooling season finds the fault before winter heating relies on something that is already tired.

  3. 03

    Every year, on either schedule

Once before it is leaned on heavily is the baseline. Twice a year is a fair argument on an older machine or one in a salty location, where the coil faces greater damage.

Why a neglected heat pump costs money instead of failing

A compressor that runs too hard wears faster, and a system running too hard because the charge is down or the coil is dirty runs the compressor that hard every single day. That is the difference between eight years of life and five. The compressor does not usually announce the problem by failing suddenly; it announces it by taking longer to run and using more power.

A heat pump with drifted control curves runs longer to reach temperature. The system will eventually get there, but it has done so at a higher power draw and against a wider temperature swing. Over a year, that is not a small difference in electricity cost. It is also not always obvious, because a property that has been extended or re-glazed now simply has a bigger load than when the system was installed.

The honest truth is that a machine that has never been serviced is like a car that has never had oil changed. Nothing breaks loudly; it just becomes gradually more expensive and less reliable. The cost is invisible because it is spread across the power bill every month rather than appearing on a repair invoice once.

Related to servicing

Air conditioning maintenance

Split and ducted systems need servicing too, though the work is different.

Smart climate control

A service visit often includes tuning the control curves, which is where much of the efficiency lives.

Understanding your system before the first service makes every visit count more.

How your request reaches a company

Mallorca Climate Control is a comparison service. A request for heat pump servicing goes to the air conditioning and heat pump companies on our list; they quote the work and carry it out, and any agreement is between you and the company you pick.

  1. 01

    Describe the job

Tell us the property, roughly what you want and where it is. Photographs and a rough plan help, though neither is required.

  2. 02

    We match it

The request goes to companies that work in your area and take on this kind of job at this size.

  3. 03

    They quote you

Each company contacts you directly with its own price, timing and approach. We do not set any of it.

  4. 04

    You compare and choose

Put the quotes side by side and take the one you want, or none of them. Using the site costs you nothing.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Once a year is the minimum, timed for before the season the system will be worked hard in. Twice a year is worth considering on an older system, on a coastal property where salt damages the coil faster, or on one that heats and cools so is always in use.

Is heat pump servicing different from air conditioning servicing?

Yes, in important ways. A heat pump reverses between heating and cooling, which means the defrost cycle and the compressor are under different kinds of stress. The control system is also more complex because it has to manage flow temperature instead of just switching on and off. A company that services heat pumps should be different from one that only does air conditioning.

Can an owner do any of the servicing?

Filters and visual checks are things an owner can do between visits. Opening up the refrigerant side, testing pressures or adjusting control curves demands equipment and training a homeowner is unlikely to have. The work is not dangerous to do badly; it is just invisible.

What is a refrigerant charge test?

The compressor draws in gas from the evaporator and pushes it to the condenser. The difference in pressure between the two tells you whether the system is losing gas. A drop of five per cent per year is normal enough that it is not spotted on one visit; but a loss of two per cent or more in a single month is a leak worth fixing.

Does servicing reduce running costs?

A coil clogged by salt and a charge that is down by ten per cent force the compressor to work harder for no more output. Servicing removes the clog and restores the charge, which costs money but saves money on the running costs within a year. What it does not do is make an undersized system efficient; it makes an adequate system stay adequate instead of degrading into an expensive one.
