Frequently Asked Questions
The questions that come up most, in two groups: how this site works, and what people actually want to know about climate systems on Mallorca.
What does this site do?
It matches property owners with air conditioning and heat pump companies on Mallorca. You describe the property once, the request goes to companies that work in your area, and each of them contacts you directly with its own price. The site does not carry out any of the work.
What does it cost to use?
Nothing. There is no charge to send a request and no obligation to accept any of the quotes that come back.
Do companies pay to be listed?
No. There is no paid position and no ranking, so a company appearing in your results is not a company that bought its way there.
How many companies will contact me?
Several, depending on what the request is and where the property is. They contact you directly, and you deal with whichever ones you want to.
Who is the agreement with?
With the company you choose. This site is not a party to it, does not set the price and does not carry out the work.
Is there a telephone number?
Not at present. The quote form and the email addresses on the contact page are the whole contact surface, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight.
What type of air conditioning is best for a villa?
It depends mostly on whether the ceilings are open. Ducted systems need a void to run in, so they suit a build or a deep renovation; split units need a wall and a pipe route, which is why most finished properties end up there. There is a fuller answer in the article on choosing for a villa.
Can ducted air conditioning be installed in an existing villa?
Often, and it depends entirely on what is above the ceilings. Single-storey properties with a roof space and houses with a floor above that can lose a little height are the straightforward cases. A finished house with solid slabs and no void is usually where the answer is no.
Are heat pumps suitable for Mallorca?
The climate is close to ideal for them. Their efficiency falls as the outside air gets colder, and the coldest weather here is mild by the standards of the countries where that is a real objection. The harder questions are usually where the outdoor unit stands and where a cylinder goes.
Is a heat pump better than air conditioning?
They answer different questions. Reversible air conditioning is the cheaper way to add cooling with some winter warmth. An air-to-water heat pump heats a building properly, runs underfloor pipes and can make the hot water. How many months a year somebody is in the property usually decides it.
How often should air conditioning be serviced?
Once a year before the cooling season is the baseline, and twice is a fair argument on a coastal property, on a rental, or where the system also heats. Filters are separate and want attention far more often than that.
How long does an installation take?
A single unit on an outside wall is usually a day. A multi-split serving several rooms in a finished house is longer, because the routes have to be opened and made good. A ducted system in an existing property is longer again, and is normally done alongside other work.
Do I need permission to install air conditioning?
It depends on where the outdoor unit goes and what the building is. Anything visible on a protected facade, and anything fixed to a shared elevation in a building with a community of owners, is worth settling before a system is specified rather than after.
The room is not that hot but it feels awful. Why?
Almost certainly humidity. In still, damp air the body cannot lose heat by evaporation, so a moderate temperature feels far worse than the same reading in dry moving air. Removing moisture often changes a room more than lowering the temperature does.
Still deciding what the property needs?
Describe it once and let several companies tell you what they would price.
