Two things follow from an enclosed valley. The first is that the relief people expect after sunset arrives late, so the useful part of the day for opening a house up is shorter than it is elsewhere. The second is that there is less breeze to help an outdoor unit reject heat, which makes where that unit stands worth more thought than usual.
The houses themselves were built around living outside. Town houses in Sóller are tall, narrow and deep, with the cool of a courtyard doing the work that a system does now.
